113 - Voice

[Backdated to a few hours after the end of port. Shego stumbled back on board after four days of almost no sleep and not much food and was not braced for a serious business talk with the Admiral at all. When she talks she sounds exhausted and...not stunned exactly, but very '.....that was something I wasn't expecting to happen today'.]

So, uh.

Regina graduated?

You should probably go tell her well done because I sure as heck didn't contribute all that much.

[OOC: Any responses from anyone except Regina will get a reply 12-14 hours later because she needed to put on some band-aids and get some sleep. :c]

Kirk gave her a strange look for a few moments. "You're... not done here?"

"You assumed I was gonna just pack my things and leave the second my first inmate graduated, huh."

"I assumed you were sane and you didn't want to spend your entire new chance at life here."

"I'm not spending any of my life here. All service is suspended, remember? I'm not ageing. My new chance at life is waiting for me whenever I do leave." She side-eyed him. "Also, you stayed after the Marquis so, hypocrisy much?"

"I'd been here for three months. I was naive and stupid," Kirk answered as he finished off the rest of his champagne. "And it's kind of ego boost."

"Yeah, well. Regina only got here in February so I guess I'm naive and stupid too." She leaned into him. "I'm done when I'm done. That hasn't happened yet. Okay?"

Kirk thought about pointing out that she was stupid because she'd already been there for two years and yeah it had been as an Inmate but she knew what the basic idea of this place was. Which was hell on a tiny little ship full of trauma and death.

"I still think you should go for the island."

"It's shortlisted." She frowned. "Do you want me to leave?"

"No," Jim answered in a brief moment of total honesty that he didn't normally have. "I just don't believe that after two years, you still want to be around here."

She huffed, blowing a few strands of hair up in the air.

"I spoke to Prefect about this a while back. He said that if you don't know what to do with the rest of your life, there's worse places to work it out than a ship where you're effectively immortal and constantly visiting new worlds, even if most of them suck. At the time I thought he was crazy but he does kinda have a point."

"He was probably drunk when he said that," Kirk muttered. "And there are better places to figure it out too."

"If you're telling me I should be ignoring advice people give me while they're drunk, that's like half your Wardening invalidated."

"You're the one who says I didn't do anything anyway."

"Oh please, I never said that." Possibly reinterpreting past events a little there, Shego.

"You implied it heavily without so many words." But he'd ignored it so it was okay, really.

"It's not my fault if you read stuff into stuff. Maybe your ego's more delicate than I thought."

"I still think it's stupid to stay. Don't you have an apartment in Gotham?"

"What part of 'it'll still be there when I get back' is unclear to you, Jim?"

"Why have tomorrow what you can have today?"

"That attitude is not a small part of why I pursued a life of crime." She half-turned to look at him, propping her elbow up on the backrest of the couch. "You don't want me to go, so why does it matter why I'm staying?"

"Part of my job to nag you into doing what's best for you," Kirk answered with a shrug. Or he just assumed that she'd end up here like him, trapped and bitter and he didn't want that to happen.

She's already been trapped and bitter for two years, Kirk. Nowhere to go but up.

"Your job as my ex-Warden or as my..." She shrugged. 'Boyfriend' was a word with a lot of baggage. "Whatever we are now?"

Totally different when you chose the thing that led you to be trapped and bitter.

"Mix of both with a little starship captain thrown in there."

"Yeah, well, I'll take it under advisement. Anyway, if I go home I might just wind up back here without the option of leaving whenever I - " She realized what she was saying and her tongue froze in her mouth. " - yeah."

Kirk didn't look at her when she said that, staring rather intently at his hands instead and suddenly wishing for something stronger than the champagne. Yeah, he was stuck here and that sucked but he wouldn't trade the few months he'd gotten on Enterprise to voluntarily stay here and avoid all of that.

"You're kidding yourself if you think you really have the option of leaving whenever you want when you have an Inmate anyway."
