113 - Voice

[Backdated to a few hours after the end of port. Shego stumbled back on board after four days of almost no sleep and not much food and was not braced for a serious business talk with the Admiral at all. When she talks she sounds exhausted and...not stunned exactly, but very '.....that was something I wasn't expecting to happen today'.]

So, uh.

Regina graduated?

You should probably go tell her well done because I sure as heck didn't contribute all that much.

"Thanks, honey. I appreciate you enquiring after my health like you totally did," she said blandly, accepting the bottle. "Flynn okay?"

"Rattled like hell, I don't think they have psychopaths were he's from. Or he's just completely ignored them all somehow."

'He does seem kind of oblivious," she offered, deliberately skating over her own experiences with having her face pushed against the Barge's grindstone of crazy. Wandering into the kitchen area, she set down the champagne bottle and went looking in a cabinet for glasses.

"Good rattled or bad rattled?"

"I'm not sure yet. But a couple of months ago, I wouldn't have bet on him pushing me out of the way. That's encouraging."

"Yeah, at that point in our acquaintance I still would've been using you as a shield." Blatantly untrue. She retrieved two glasses - not flutes, but whatever - and popped the cork off the bottle, filling both glasses with minimal spillage.

"You've stoppped considering me as a blood shield?" Jim shot back, laughing a little. "How kind of you."

"Maybe on special occasions." She offered him a glass. "Should we be toasting to something?"

Kirk took the glass from her. "To some good coming from being here?"

"I'll drink to that." She touched the rim of her glass to his. "Cheers."

Kirk took a long drink from his glass before setting it aside. "What are your plans now?"

She half-laughed just because she'd seen the question coming a mile off and she didn't know how to answer.

"I don't know. I just - " She shrugged. "I don't know."

He was maybe a little predictable in assuming that everyone was going to leave. "You don't have even a little idea of what you want?"

"In the long term? No." She wandered over to the living area and dropped down onto a couch, defying the laws of physics only as much as necessary to avoid spilling her drink.

"You don't want to go retire to your island or planet or whatever you asked for with your deal?" Kirk asked, giving her a skeptical look for a moment before he went to sit down next to her.

"I didn't actually ask for anything. Just left my check blank in case I had a better idea. I still dunno what I'm gonna do when I'm done here."

Kirk gave her a strange look for a few moments. "You're... not done here?"

"You assumed I was gonna just pack my things and leave the second my first inmate graduated, huh."

"I assumed you were sane and you didn't want to spend your entire new chance at life here."

"I'm not spending any of my life here. All service is suspended, remember? I'm not ageing. My new chance at life is waiting for me whenever I do leave." She side-eyed him. "Also, you stayed after the Marquis so, hypocrisy much?"

"I'd been here for three months. I was naive and stupid," Kirk answered as he finished off the rest of his champagne. "And it's kind of ego boost."

"Yeah, well. Regina only got here in February so I guess I'm naive and stupid too." She leaned into him. "I'm done when I'm done. That hasn't happened yet. Okay?"

Kirk thought about pointing out that she was stupid because she'd already been there for two years and yeah it had been as an Inmate but she knew what the basic idea of this place was. Which was hell on a tiny little ship full of trauma and death.

"I still think you should go for the island."

"It's shortlisted." She frowned. "Do you want me to leave?"

"No," Jim answered in a brief moment of total honesty that he didn't normally have. "I just don't believe that after two years, you still want to be around here."

She huffed, blowing a few strands of hair up in the air.

"I spoke to Prefect about this a while back. He said that if you don't know what to do with the rest of your life, there's worse places to work it out than a ship where you're effectively immortal and constantly visiting new worlds, even if most of them suck. At the time I thought he was crazy but he does kinda have a point."
